In January, London gets about eight hours of grey daylight. Sitges gets sun, a promenade to walk along at lunchtime, and a sea you can still look at every morning from your desk. This is the season the locals keep for themselves.
The weather, without the brochure
Sitges sits on a south-facing stretch of coast protected by the Garraf hills, which is why it is a few degrees milder than Barcelona in winter. Daytime temperatures from November to March typically sit in the mid-teens Celsius, with plenty of clear days, and nights that rarely go below five or six degrees. It does rain, usually in short episodes rather than grey weeks, and there are windy days along the seafront. Swimming is for the brave from December to March, but walking, running and cycling along the coast are a daily pleasure.
What daily life looks like
- Mornings: the promenade is quiet, the bakeries are open, and the light over the sea is the best of the year.
- Working day: a dedicated office, WiFi included, and Barcelona 35 minutes away by train when you need a meeting in person.
- Evenings: restaurants and bars stay open all year. Winter is when you get a table without booking and the staff have time to talk.
- Weekends: the Garraf natural park for hiking, the Penedès wine region 20 minutes inland, Barcelona for museums and concerts, and Sitges Carnival in February, one of the biggest in Spain.
The calendar
| Month | What happens | Feel |
|---|---|---|
| November | Town empties after the film festival, autumn light, first fires in the fireplaces | Calm, local |
| December | Christmas markets, lights on the seafront, family visits | Cosy, social |
| January | Quietest month of the year, ideal for deep work | Silent, bright |
| February | Carnival week: parades, costumes, the whole town in the street | Loud, joyful |
| March | Spring arrives early, terraces fill up, the sea warms | Optimistic |
Who spends winter here
Three kinds of guests, in our experience. Remote professionals from northern Europe who want two or three months of daylight and a base near an international airport. Families who have just arrived in the Barcelona area and need a comfortable home while they look for a permanent one and settle the children into school. And couples or individuals going through a house renovation, a sabbatical or a change of life, who want somewhere calm, beautiful and well connected.
Cost: the best value of the year
November to March is our low season, and our rates reflect it. Stays of two months or longer are discounted, and long stays have a flat rate. WiFi, water, electricity and heating are included, so the number you see is the number you pay. For reference, a similar period in a serviced apartment in Barcelona city is usually significantly more expensive, and you would still be an hour from the beach.
Practical notes
- Getting here: Barcelona airport is about 30 minutes by car. Trains from Barcelona Sants run several times an hour.
- Shops and services: supermarkets, pharmacies, doctors and gyms are all open year-round and within walking distance of El Vinyet.
- Language: Catalan and Spanish are the local languages, and English is widely spoken. Sitges has a large international community.
- Schools: several international schools in Sitges and nearby Castelldefels take mid-year arrivals.
